2010-2014

GROWTH PERIOD

Now that BBM had risen in popularity, guest judges included international Grammy Award Winning and Multi-Platinum selling producers such as 9th Wonder, Just Blaze, Statik Selektah, Boi-1da, Sonny Digital and Metro Boomin. We brought on a new host, one of Canada’s top comedians, Trixx, to take hosting to a whole new level. It was also during this time that we secured staple DJ’s including DJ Mel Boogie and DJ P Plus.  However, we have had a few fill-ins over the years such as Lissa Monet, DJ Grouch, Killa Kellz and DJ Mensa.

Producers were coming from different parts of the world to compete, including from USA and Europe. Those who started their careers at BBM were now starting to win Grammy Awards, sell millions of records and become household names.

We expanded to incorporate an educational component to the battles such as keynote speakers, workshops, product demonstrations, beat deconstruction sessions, film screenings, and more. We had a total of four battles take place during these intermediate years. The venues, crowd, and reach grew significantly which solidified BBM as an international launch pad for aspiring music producers. Toronto producers were starting to become fixtures on the Billboard charts. Toronto became a new epicenter for music industry executives from around the world looking to uncover fresh talent.

The sounds evolved during this time, stepping away from the traditional boom bap sound to a more southern trap-oriented sound. This caused a shift in music culture. Some producers who used to do well in battles pre-2010 were finding it difficult to change with the times post-2010.

Up to this point, most of the battle winners were Toronto-based, but that changed as this chapter closed. The winners of the battles received larger sums of cash, software as well as hardware equipment from a growing list of sponsors, international bragging rights and opportunities to collaborate with established artists that would later lead to millions of record sales and billions of streams. Some notable names include Neenah, 808 Gang, Magic, Duke Dinero, WondaGurl, Burd N Keyz, Bijan Amir, Jordon Manswell, DZL, Sevn Thomas, FrancisGotHeat, Superville, NXGHT, Deli, Choicez and Tyz N Checks.
